Sam's foraging walk includes edible and medicinal plants at 4:00 PM, followed by a short address by Rylee Sommers-Flanagan from Upper Seven Law.
Among the most troubling incidents is the arrest of Beker Rengifo del Castillo, a Venezuelan man living legally in the Flathead with humanitarian parole through July 2026. He was pulled over in Whitefish for a broken taillight, a traffic violation at most, but he ended up detained and transferred to ICE custody. It took nearly a week and a flood of public attention before he was released. His only “crime” was existing in a system that sees immigrants as inherently suspect.
Most recently is the apprehension of Christopher Martinez, a father of four from Helena who has lived in the United States for nearly three decades. Martinez was stopped during his lunch break for expired registration tags. Federal agents swarmed the vehicle and detained him—not because of any verified warrant or charge, but due to a case of mistaken identity. Despite being the wrong person, he was detained, transferred to ICE, and is now fighting to remain in Montana with his family. These are not isolated incidents. They represent a pattern of radicalized surveillance and overreach.
