Discover how to teach your horse to find hidden objects using their excellent power of scent detection.
A one-day course where you will learn...
- theory of scentwork including the equine olfactory system and links to emotions and the brain
- theory of how to train using positive reinforcement to enhance the fun and enjoyment for your equine
- theory of how scent travels including wind direction at various levels, ground conditions, topography and land features
- how to discover the best rewards for your horse
- how to discover the best scent to use for your horse plus our special super-sniffer scentwork blend
- how to create your personal training plan, and effective plans which we have used including variations for liberty work, enclosed or open areas etc
- the practicalities of a professional search including boundary searches and how to effectively search an area, plus the importance of documentation and logging search work
- where, how and when you can use scentwork including benefits to the equine
- different methods of leading and exchanging leadership with your equine so you can become the follower, not the leader
- learn about typical problems which can arise, and how to avoid or work through them
- equipment you need (and what you don't need!), and our super-budget method!
Alongside the theory and discussion there will be practicals and demos so you can observe horses at different stages in their training. You will refine your timing and handling skills, develop observational skills for the environment and weather, discuss real demo training sessions to analyse what new learning was going on, evaluate success etc. We include time for questions and discussion so that we can help you with strategies to suit your individual equine and situation.
This course is for non-ridden searches and suitable for all ages and sizes of equines.
Please note this is NOT a training day where you bring your horse. The early stages of scentwork involves several preparatory sessions to discover the best motivation for your horse and develop new handling methods as a different partnership evolves. For that reason, it is not feasible to try and train a horse from scratch to doing a search in one day.
WHO ARE THE TRAINERS?
You will be taught be Kathryn (yard owner and scentwork trainer), Bob (former professional scentwork dog trainer) and Maria (scentwork trainer and search rider).

The booking deposit is £30 paid through Eventbrite. This covers our facilities, fuel costs, refreshments etc.
The remaining £120 is paid directly by bank transfer to Veterans in Communities (we will provide you with the bank details) or alternatively in cash on the day, and we will have Gift Aid forms for VIC available for those who wish to complete them.
The booking deposit is refundable up to one week before the day.
START AND FINISH
Start time is 9.30am, with arrival from 9am for brew and croissants.
Finish time is 5.30pm.
We prefer that you do not bring dogs as it can be unfair for them to have to stay in your car all day, only getting out when you have a brew-break. However we understand that for some people this is a preferable alternative to them being home alone for a long day.
