Nightclub Two Step (NC2S), also known as Disco Two Step or California Two Step, is a partner dance developed in the mid-1960s by Buddy Schwimmer, a teenage West Coast Swing dancer from Whitaker, Illinois. Created to address the lack of a suitable dance for slow, romantic ballads played at high school parties, Schwimmer crafted a smooth, relaxed dance that allowed couples to move beyond simple swaying. By 1978, it gained popularity as a Disco Couples Dance, characterized by its quick-quick-slow rhythm and casual hold, often danced to mid-tempo 4/4 ballads like "The Lady in Red." Over time, NC2S evolved into distinct styles, with Country Western and Ballroom communities adopting it, the latter introducing a gliding "Ballroom Two Step" variant, while its versatility made it a staple for social dancing, weddings, and competitions.
