Long-time Te Awanga resident and renown photographer, Richard Brimer, draws on his extensive catalogue of photos from the past 40 years to present us with images that capture the essence of his coastal town. His photography not only depicts the changing colours and moods of the sea, it also documents the characters and activities that make Te Awanga the colourful and vibrant coastal community it is.
Auckland artist, Richard Adams, presents works on paper and on canvas including his recently developed colour-block style paintings. Adams' work is striking, using the colours and textures of the coast as his inspiration. By breaking up and reassembling the pictorial plane, he creates paintings within paintings as if collaged. It is an artistic exploration that tracks through stacked shapes, colour theory, and nods to cartography - like maps and records of a sailor's journey merging with the hazy impressions of scenic views and treasures found, turbulent weather, the powerful pull of the moon and the changing tide.
Together, Brimer and Adams offer two perspectives on coastal life: one rooted in observation, the other in improvisation. Side by side, their works speak to each other across medium and time, inviting viewers into a rich conversation about place, perception, and the enduring power of the sea.
