Let’s get off the beaten path! Guided walk on Shackleford Banks 11/28!
Want to walk off some Thanksgiving calories while enjoying the great outdoors instead of sparring with shoppers over Black Friday deals? Join us for a Ranger led tour of Shackleford Banks on November 28, 2025, at 9:15am!
Enjoy breath-taking wildlife and scenery as we walk across Shackleford Banks. Experience the area known as the submerge at low tide, when birds flock there to forage. Take in stunning views of the lighthouse from an unexpected vantage point. Watch in awe as the famous wild horses of Shackleford Banks roam the dunes in search of food, water, and shelter. Visitors are encouraged to bring their binoculars, spotting scopes and/or cameras to create memories throughout the tour. If you have none of these, that's okay. Please arrive at the Harkers Island Visitor Center by 9:00am to check in with the ferry. All are welcomed!
Space is limited to 15 people. Reserve your spot by calling the Harkers Island Visitor Center at 252-728-2250 x 0. While there is no cost for the program, participants will need to purchase a ferry ticket to Shackleford Banks, leaving from Harkers Island. Round trip ferry reservations must be purchased in advance through Island Express Ferry Service. Please book the 9:15am ferry, and plan to take the 11:30 pm pick up.
This is considered a moderate walk. Plan to walk in loose sand, through shallow water, over mud flats and climb dunes. Sturdy, closed toe shoes that can get wet are highly recommended. Pack water, bug spray, and snacks!
