About the event

Hybrid: Managing Deer Density and Impact Within Forested Residential Communities
Join David deCalesta for a discussion of the management of deer impact on residential properties and the management of deer in the surrounding forested area. This talk is co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservation Commission's Biodiversity Committee. This is a hybrid event. Join us in person in the Mayer Room or online via Zoom. No registration required in person; register for Zoom at: https://thehowe.libcal.com/event/15286584

To help inform deer-management plans, David will discuss the deer-carrying capacity of residential and forested landscapes, address various deer-management strategies including bow- and firearm-hunting, and give historical examples of successes and failures.

Dartmouth graduate (1964) David deCalesta obtained his undergraduate degree in psychology and graduate degrees in Wildlife Management at the University of Colorado. He started off as a research biologist at University of Oregon on matters of wildlife management with an emphasis on deer. He taught at University of Oregon for 13 years.

Currently a wildlife consultant and writer, he has been a research wildlife botanist for the USDA Forest Service since 2000, and served as data manager for the recent landscape-scale project Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative, a demonstration of an adaptive deer management program in northwestern PA of 74,000 acres in hardwood forests. He is the author of Deer Management for Forest Landowners and Managers (2019).
