Bernie Larsen

During the mid-1990s, musician and producer Bernie Larsen relocated to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he founded Sub Urban Exchange—a hybrid music venue, recording studio, and cultural outpost nestled in the remote north. Over several years, Larsen produced more than 50 albums and hosted over 200 live shows, transforming a rural space into a vibrant artistic hub.

As the founder of the independent label Spinout Records, he worked closely with local and regional artists, nurturing a unique DIY scene that bridged genres and generations. His role extended beyond producer and performer—he was a catalyst for creative community. The scene that formed around Sub Urban Exchange would go on to inspire How to Cause a Scene, a documentary Larsen began directing years later to chronicle the unexpected rise of this music movement in an unlikely place.

This Michigan chapter marked a shift in Larsen’s career from touring guitarist and major-label session player to grassroots music mentor and documentarian, laying the groundwork for his continued work in independent film and storytelling.
