Creative Writing w/ Jimmy Doom
This session will take place the last Sunday of every month, and notebooks will be provided. See below for more info from the author himself:
"Nothing about writing is scarier than anything you’ve experienced in life. Does it have an air of vulnerability?
Sure.
This is where fiction comes in to save you.
You can cloak those vulnerabilities.
Roald Dahl was a spy.
He lived some tense and scary situations.
He wrote stories about giant peaches and demented candy makers.
Write.
You’re here because writing interests you.
Write.
The only thing about writing that can hurt you is carpal tunnel, and if you write enough to give yourself carpal tunnel, you won.
We’re going to push you into the water.
You’re going to swim.
We will do our best to not let you drown, but you gotta paddle and kick.
For your own growth as a writer we’re going to ask you to complete some projects.
We will offer as much help and guidance as we can along the way, and we’re not going to penalize lack of completion.
But there will be rewards for completion. Those rewards will be mostly intangible, but some of them will be tangible.
This is not a competition.
You are competing against yourself to more easily express your ideas in the written word. This will be skewed heavily toward fiction.
If these exercises unleash nonfiction essays and memoir, we’ll applaud that too.
There won’t be many rules.
There will be guidelines and suggestions.
Some suggestions will be stronger than others and feel like rules.
Writing more freely and confidently is the objective.
Writing more joyfully is the objective.
If you have any other writing objectives, state them and we’ll do our best to help you achieve them."
