Kåre Tveter besøkte Svalbard første gang i 1984 og ble sterkt preget av det særegne landskapet og lyset. Selv om han malte etter erindring og ikke laget skisser på stedet, regnes hans skildringer av Svalbard som unike i norsk kunsthistorie. Han er kjent for sin særegne bruk av lys og kontraster, og mange mener han er den som best har fanget naturens råskap og sesongenes vekslinger på øygruppen.
Tveter beveget seg mot det abstrakte, men beholdt gjerne konkrete motiv. Dette gir utstillingen et tidløst preg og gjør den fortsatt aktuell – særlig i lys av klimaendringene i nord. Hans nøyaktige observasjoner av natur og lys inspirerer fortsatt nye generasjoner kunstnere.

Kåre Tveter first visited Svalbard in 1984 and was deeply moved by the island’s distinctive landscape and light. Although he painted from memory and did not create sketches on site, his depictions of Svalbard are considered unique in Norwegian art history. He is renowned for his distinctive use of light and contrast, and many believe he captured the rawness of nature and the shifting of the seasons on the archipelago like no other artist.
While Tveter moved towards abstraction in his work, he often retained a recognisable motif. This gives the exhibition a timeless quality and keeps it relevant—particularly in light of the ongoing climate changes in the Arctic. His precise observations of terrain and light continue to inspire new generations of artists.
This permanent exhibition offers insight into both the changing nature of the landscape and the artist’s own reflections. At Nordover Art Centre, you can purchase signed prints and bibliophile editions of his work.
