“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy that is translated through you ... and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. If you block it ... the world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is ... It is your business ... to keep the channel open." - Martha Graham
This is a space for deep listening to our bodies, exploring the innate movement shapes and rhythms within the body, through dance and/or expressive movement. No dance experience is required and all bodies are welcome ! You may be as energetic or as gentle as your body asks of you.
The goals are curiosity, creative play and intuitive expression, responding as authentically as possible to the question: How does my body want to move (right now)?
The Circle is a space for witnessing and being witnessed - practising compassionate non-judgement and courageous vulnerability. We will have the opportunity to explore instinctive movement in small groups and pairs, in a way that feels empowering, joyous and easeful.
This is quite different to ecstatic dance or five rhythms. We explore with minimal music, in order to avoid imposing external rhythms on the body – although we may find that vocalization and percussion arise as part of our embodied expression.
A series of facilitated tasks will be given as a framework, and we can investigate and play freely within those provocations. We will begin by circling together and centering ourselves, and close the space by again circling, with the opportunity to share our experiences of the evening over a warming and nourishing brew of cacao.
“Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance!" - Martha Graham
