A fun, fast-paced tour through the writing toolbox of an acclaimed screenwriter, using short films, music videos, and clips from great movies to dive into the fundamentals of storytelling for the screen. Suitable for new screenwriters, for artists coming to screenwriting from other disciplines, and for experienced screenwriters looking for a boot-camp refresher.
Michael's short films and feature films have won awards internationally, and have screened at numerous international festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Berlin, Locarno, New York, London, and Melbourne. Michael was the 2020 recipient of the Te Aupounamu Māori Screen Excellence Award in recognition of members of the Māori filmmaking community who have made high level contributions to screen storytelling.
Michael teaches screenwriting at numerous tertiary institutions, and mentors emerging Māori and Pasifika filmmakers through Script to Screen, Ngā Aho Whakaari and NZFC Fresh Shorts.
The workshop costs $30 and includes morning tea. Registration required.
