Jazz superstar and trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Tod Dickow, and acclaimed Bay Area trio Charged Particles will be performing the music of one of the most important voices in the history of jazz—saxophonist Michael Brecker. Winner of 15 Grammy Awards, Michael Brecker’s unique voice and approach to the tenor saxophone influenced every saxophonist playing jazz today. The jazz world lost him in 2007 at the age of 57.
Randy Brecker is an award-winning trumpeter, composer, and band leader who has helped shape the sound of jazz, R&B, and rock for more than four decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists from James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Parliament/Funkadelic to Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa. After moving to New York City, he was a member of such prominent bands as Clark Terry’s Big Bad Band, the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and the Horace Silver Quintet. He performed with the jazz-rock super-band Blood, Sweat and Tears, the seminal fusion group ‘Dreams’, Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Cobham. In 1975, Randy and his brother Michael created the Brecker Brothers band, who released six albums and garnered seven Grammy nominations. Since then, he has been one of the busiest artists in jazz.
Tod Dickow is “one of the best saxophonists in the world” according to Jazz Life Magazine, and his playing has been recognized by outstanding soloist awards at the Pacific Coast Jazz Festival and the Outstanding Soloist award from Down Beat Magazine. He has appeared with numerous celebrated artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Jackie & Roy, Harry Connick Jr, Steve Allen, Terry Gibbs, Frank Sinatra Jr., Dave Brubeck.
Charged Particles, the Bay Area trio-cum-quartet led by drummer Jon Krosnick is celebrating their 28th anniversary, featuring three of the Bay Area’s virtuosos playing jazz while crossing stylistic boundaries and blending diverse traditions to create engaging new sounds. Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisational skills. Aaron Germain is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist. Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the country today.
In honor of Michael Brecker, Charged Particles recorded a live CD of his music which was included on “Best Of” lists in JazzTimes magazine, Jazzwise magazine, All About Jazz, and The Mercury News, to name a few. Michael Brecker’s biographer, Bill Mikowski, said that the performance is “staggering in its authenticity.” And DownBeat magazine said they play “exciting, satisfying stuff.”
