The Rude Mechanicals invite you to audition for its upcoming production of Shakespeare’s King Lear. This production will run weekends from Aug 22 - Sept 6 at the Greenbelt Arts Center in Greenbelt, MD., directed by Claudia Bach and stagemanaged by Lucian Clarkewallis. Auditions will run Tuesday May 27 and Wednesday May 28 from 8-10pm at the Greenbelt Arts Center. No appointment is necessary.
This is a 10-actor production of King Lear set loosely in the late 20th century. Lear, his daughters, Gloucester and his sons, as well as Kent are in a close but crumbling family structure. What seemed comfortable and stable, grounded in family expectations and norms, slowly collapses around them, along with their abilities, perceptions of the world, and even their identities. This American gothic horror tale will take these characters from privilege to tragedy through their failure to see each other clearly.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script, which will be provided. Sides will be available in advance on our website (rudemechanicals.com) as soon as possible. You may prepare a one to two minute monologue if you wish. Large-print versions of the sides will also be available.
You may be invited for a callback on Thursday, May 29, should they be needed.
Rehearsals will be in Greenbelt, MD; actors may expect 2-3 rehearsals per week between Mon – Thurs between 7 and 10pm, beginning with a table read the week of June 2.
The Rude Mechanicals are an all-volunteer organization.
