Trying to describe it seems like a betrayal – though it’s influenced many, the joyous Celine and Julie Go Boating is truly singular. Perhaps the best-known film from the French New Wave’s Jacques Rivette, it’s also one of his most audience-friendly. (Its 196 minutes rush by, compared to the thirteen hours of his previous Out 1.) Two young friends, a librarian and a magician, fill their lives with creative amusement – and find themselves repeatedly, hypnotically drawn to a mansion in which murder is in the air, unless they can re-write life itself… “You feel like anything is possible.
