Michael J. Rosen: Opening Celebration of "Practice IS Perfect"

Join us for the joyful opening celebration of "Practice IS Perfect," a brilliant exhibit by the endlessly creative Michael J. Rosen, on Saturday, May 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Granville Center for the Arts gallery!

This collection features Rosen's daily drawings—what he calls his "unintentional idling on the page"—where anything that wanders through his mind might take form. From imagined artifacts and remembered animals to still lifes and fleeting film faces, these works are about presence, discipline, and the quiet magic of noticing. For Rosen, drawing is as essential as drawing breath. "Even as I draw things—invented objects, remembered creatures from botany and zoology, artifacts, flowers in vases on my table, faces passing in a film—I draw from the act of seeing, composing, and solving the relationships of shapes that begin to populate a blank space. This discipline itself is what's perfect."

Most of the drawings—what he affectionately calls "arti-fictions"—are rendered in charcoal, while others are enriched with washes made from the black walnuts growing on his land. The exhibit also features Sumi-e ink works and inventive collages built from cut-up pages of his sketchbooks, offering a fuller look at the scope and spirit of his persistent, passionate practice.

A Columbus native, Michael J. Rosen is a maker in every sense of the word. Best known as the author of more than 150 books for adults and young readers, he's also a poet, editor, playwright, humorist, and longtime curator of James Thurber's legacy. His visual art career began in graduate school, with illustrations appearing in The New Yorker and Gourmet, and has since grown into a lifelong pursuit of expressive, genre-defying creativity.
