Portsmouth band Action Painting!, revered for their electrifying energy and artful noise, are back with a brand-new 5-track EP, set for release on limited edition vinyl
Formed in the early 1990s, Action Painting! quickly became a cult favourite of the burgeoning indie-pop scene. Their early singles, including the frantic and fiery "Collapsing Cloud" and the anthemic "These Things Happen," earned them a place on the iconic Sarah Records roster — a label synonymous with heartfelt DIY pop. Blending jagged guitar lines with urgent vocals and vivid lyricism, Action Painting! stood out for their kinetic spirit and raw emotion.
Following their initial run, the band resurfaced with renewed purpose via Emotional Response Records, contributing to the critically praised compilation Trial Cuts (1989-95). This collection reignited interest in their unique sound and introduced a new generation to their dynamic and thoughtful songwriting.
Now, Action Painting! are set to remind the world exactly why their music continues to resonate. The new EP captures the essence of their early fire while showcasing a matured, richly layered sound. Packed with hooks, heart, and just the right amount of chaos, these five new songs are a celebration of everything that made — and continues to make — Action Painting! so essential.
