Spring Seeker Backpack in Sabino Canyon (July 4-6)

This trip is for experienced Spring Seekers only. You must have been on a previous Spring Seeker group trip, or submitted at least five surveys on your own before attending this trip. The reason for this is we will be trying to identify new springs, and having experience at a number of different springs that have different amounts of water and vegetation evidence will be helpful.

What We're Doing

This is a backpacking trip. On Friday, July 4, we will hike in eight to nine miles to near Hutch's Pool. For the remainder of the day on Friday and all day Saturday, we will explore a few side canyons with known water sources that do not yet appear on our springs maps. On Sunday, July 6, we will strike camp and hike out back to Gordon Hirabayashi Campground. The total amount of walking over the weekend could be over 25 miles, on and off trail, so please consider that when deciding to join us.

Bring

• tent and rain fly (the monsoon is due!)
• sleeping pad
• underpad for thorns/sharp rocks
• sleeping bag

• rain jacket (if wanted)

• closed-toes shoes or boots for hiking

• water filter (there should be water at Hutch's)

• bear/rodent-safe food storage
• rope/cord to hang food

• headlamp
• spare battery for your phone (for Spring Seeker surveys)
• meds/toiletries
• first-aid kit
• hiking poles (if you want them)
• inReach/satellite communicator
• swimsuit (optional)
• anything else you would need for the weekend.

There is no cell service in the West Fork of Sabino Canyon. So please be ready to unplug!

Getting There

You can either drive yourself and park at Gordon Hirabayahi Campground, or carpool with us from the office. If driving yourself, please be there by 7 a.m. on Friday, July 4. If carpooling with us, the carpool will leave the office at 6 a.m. on Friday, July 4.
