Evening Hike in the Bird Sanctuary - Learn About Bats

Join Brian Heeringa, Wildlife Biologist, on Saturday, August 2nd to learn about the bats of Wisconsin, and which bats you may encounter locally. Discover the importance of bats and the role they play in the ecosystem. The summer months are a busy time for bats in Wisconsin and their presence on the landscape can be seen at dusk as they come out to hunt for insects.

We will meet at the Bird Road Trailhead at 8:00 p.m. Following a short presentation at the Bird Road Trailhead, we will watch for bats to emerge from the surrounding forest and use bat detectors to listen for their echolocation. We will then take a “out and back” hike from the trailhead to Rover’s Camp Site, approx. 3.0 miles round trip, continuing to listen for bats and other night sounds along the way. Bring a small flashlight or headlamp for the hike.

To find Bird Road Trailhead, head south on US Hwy 53 from Solon Springs, WI, turn right or west on County Road M, travel about 1/2 mile or less and turn right on Bird Road. The trailhead is on the right-hand side of the road, close to the County Road M and Bird Road intersection.
