When The Dust Settles is an intimate and visually powerful documentary that follows the lives of three Australians, each forever changed by the ripple effects of suicide. Set against the raw beauty of the outback and remote communities, the film explores stories of grief, survival, and the long road to healing.
Through honest, vulnerable reflections, these three individuals share the weight they’ve carried, the moments that nearly broke them, and the unexpected ways they found connection, purpose, and hope. More than a film about loss, When The Dust Settles is a story of what comes after—the search for meaning, the strength in community, and the courageous steps it takes to keep the conversation alive.
Filmed locally in and around Goondiwindi by award-winning director Stuart McKay, and created in collaboration with The Outback Mind Foundation, this powerful piece was made possible through the grassroots fundraising efforts of Maddie Mortimer’s Steps 4 Strength challenge, where she ran 21 half-marathons in 21 days in memory of her late father, Warren Paul Gunns.
