🌊 Join us at Prince of Wales Bay where we'll be working along the beautiful timtumili minanya (Derwent River) to remove boxthorn and turn it into biochar! We will also be looking after our plantings from last winter, weeding and watering if needed.
🌿 Boxthorn is a notorious W**d that is easily spread by birds, and colonises roadsides and other open areas. Our quest at Prince of Wales Bay is to remove all the boxthorn (we're almost there!), turn it into biochar and replace it with native plants. By helping us, you'll be playing an important part in building back habitat for native wildlife, restoring riparian ecosystems, and making the area a nicer place to be for all species - including humans.
🔥We will have a biochar kiln on-site and will show you how to cut and burn cuttings. The biochar will be used when we come back to plant (in winter 2026), and you can even take some home to use in your garden! Please bring a bucket or tub, or sturdy plastic bag to take your own biochar home to improve your soil. If you haven't heard of biochar, don't worry! We will explain everything and it's all very easy - all training and tools will be provided.
🫖A complimentary morning tea is included, to thank our volunteers for their wonderful efforts to restore habitat along the river.
Due to safety reasons, we invite volunteers aged 16 and over to take part of this event. Thank you for understanding.
👖Please ensure you wear clothing that's not precious - a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, fully enclosed, a hat and sturdy shoes (boxthorn spikes can go through shoes!).
