About the event

Captain James Hall Street Renaming
City of Glen Cove to Honor Fallen Firefighter with Street Renaming Ceremony

Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 PM | Corner of Bryce Avenue & Forest Avenue

Glen Cove, NY — On Thursday, August 14, 2025, the City of Glen Cove will host a street renaming ceremony in honor of Captain James Hall of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department—marking 50 years to the day since he gave his life in the line of duty. The ceremony will take place at the corner of Bryce Avenue and Forest Avenue at 7:00 PM, and all are welcome to attend.

Captain Hall was a devoted husband, a proud Glen Cove firefighter, and a loving father of six. At the time of his passing on August 14, 1975, he and his wife, Catherine Alice Hall, were raising their children: Dave (22), Pat (18), Scott (16), Jami (15), Andy (13), and Jill (11). His son Pat, then serving with the U.S. Navy in Scotland, received the heartbreaking news overseas.

“The firefighters were like extended family,” said Pat Hall. “After my father passed, the department and the City of Glen Cove showed us so much kindness and compassion. We’re grateful for how they stood by our family during such a difficult time.”

Captain Hall’s dedication to Glen Cove reached far beyond the firehouse. He coached youth football, CYO basketball, and baseball, and was a constant presence in the community. His wife, Catherine Alice, served as President of the St. Patrick’s School Mother’s Club and found strength in the support of the close-knit group of Glen Cove mothers during that incredibly difficult time.

In the wake of Captain Hall’s passing, members of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department organized a golf outing to support the Hall family. According to ex-Chief William J. Basdavanos, approximately ten members who helped launch that first outing are still active in the department today—a testament to the long-standing dedication and brotherhood within the department.

“Fifty years later, we continue to remember not just the loss, but the life of Captain James Hall,” said Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck. “This street renaming is a symbol of the deep gratitude Glen Cove holds for his bravery, his service, and the enduring legacy of his family.”

The City of Glen Cove, together with the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, invites all residents, neighbors, and members of the firefighting community to join in this meaningful tribute.
