Questions for my Ancestors: a poetry and storytelling show

What does it mean to be known? To know a person? To know a land?

Fresh from a run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Meron McCardle presents Questions for my Ancestors. Seamlessly weaving together poetry and storytelling, Meron shares their experience of moving to Scotland from Aotearoa New Zealand, as they question what it means to be living in a place where they have ancestral connections to the land for the first time.

Setting up a life in Glasgow as a queer, neuro-divergent 30 year old had it’s fair share of struggles. Some of them funny, and others just a bit bleak. In amongst trying to find a home in the horrendous Glasgow rental market, looking for work and searching for community, Meron learns more about their Scottish ancestors who went on to colonise Aotearoa NZ. They grapple with the cost of their ancestors choices, and examine their responsibility as Pākeha - a descendent of British colonisers in Aoteaora.

Meron is a non-binary poet and performer from Aotearoa, New Zealand. Having moved to Glasgow a little over a year ago to explore their ancestral connection to the land, they write a lot about nature, belonging and identity. A regular in the poetry open mic scene, they can be found standing on stages around Glasgow attempting to make their audience laugh and then cry just a little. Their work has been published in Driech magazine, Coin Operated Press, The Poetry Experiment Anthology, Tin Can poetry and more.
