Expect musical fireworks and spelling binding, captivating sonic flights of fancy, as saxophones and turntables merge in joyous musical abandon. This is the first duo performance of two trailblazing, critically acclaimed artists, who have both amassed numerous collaborations with some of the world’s leading improvising musicians while performing internationally.
Described by The Wire as “one of the most technically adept and creatively daring artists to use the turntable as a musical instrument,” Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award-winning composer, turntablist and performer. Her work has been described as “genuinely ground-breaking” (London Jazz News) and “high-velocity sonic surrealism” (The Guardian). She is currently one of the most in-demand turntablists, mesmerising audiences at festivals around the world with a unique approach to improvising with turntables that is both thrilling and beguiling. Here she is collaborating with prolific saxophonist Raymond MacDonald whose playing has been characterised “as absolutely stunning, with intensity, surprise, beauty and gorgeous creative collisions emerging with every breath” (All About Jazz). His recent solo release Desire Lines was reviewed as “reflective and utterly compelling” (Jazz Journal) and “filled with distinctive punchy lyricism” (The Wire). Recent tours have included concerts in Argentina, India, Zambia, Johannesburg and Lesotho and he will arrive at The Glad Café fresh from an Australian tour that includes a commission in Melbourne for The Monash Art Ensemble.
