We are very honoured to be joined by legendary filmmaker John Smith who will be presenting some of his films spanning five decades, followed by a discussion and Q&A
John Smith was born in Walthamstow, London in 1952. He studied at North-East London Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, after which he became an active member of the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. Inspired in his formative years by conceptual art and structural film, but also fascinated by the immersive power of narrative and the spoken word, he has developed a diverse body of work that subverts the perceived boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation and abstraction. Often rooted in everyday life and personal experience, his meticulously crafted films playfully explore and expose the language of cinema.
“I like making things slightly suspicious. I want people to think: ‘Is that actually true?’ ‘Am I looking at a naturalistic image?’ And although I do lots of things which are not naturalistic, I also try to make things which are factual and straightforward in documentary format, and try to make them as improbable as possible, so you still can’t trust what you see.”
“I tend to set up expectations which are not fulfilled, leading people down the garden path a bit. It’s very deliberate and I like that playfulness, not being sure where something is going, but also not being sure quite what it is you are actually looking at. I try and make work that isn’t immediately classifiable within a particular genre.”
