The untold story: York of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Free Presentation

Join us at the Gladstone Community Center on Wednesday, June 18, at 1:00 PM in Bloye Hall for a compelling presentation by Oregon Black Pioneers, Oregon’s only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. This free public event will delve into the life of York, the only Black member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As an enslaved man who played a crucial role in the Corps of Discovery from 1803 to 1806, York’s story offers a unique perspective on American history. The presentation will explore his experiences during the expedition, his life before and after, and his place within national African American history. This program is part of the City of Gladstone’s ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity and celebrate the diverse narratives that have shaped our community. We invite all residents to attend and gain insight into this significant, yet often overlooked, chapter of our nation’s past.
