Hey there league members! Be sure to read through this entire post. Thanks to JJ for finding this idea on the interwebs and sharing it with me!
Come on out this Thursday, 7/3, for an informal tournament to test out a possible new non-IFPA format. There is no buy-in for this tournament. There will not be any cash prizes or trophies or anything like that. There will not be any separate divisions either. The idea is that this type of event would be purely for social gathering and improving pinball skills!
The basic format is that we'll build teams of either all 3 or all 4 players (depending on the number of people who particpate) and spread the players out evenly based on skill level (not entirely sure how to do that yet) so that the teams as a whole will have equal skill levels (as best as we can get them).
Based on how many people are on each team, there will either be 4 or 5 pre-selected games (one from each era) and teams will play together on the same machine and work cooperatively to build the highest total team score on each machine by adding all 3 or 4 players scores together. COACHING IS COMPLETELY ALLOWED AND ENCOURAGED!
Teams will then be awarded points based on their total team score on each machine. 1st = 5 pts, 2nd = 3 pts, 3rd = 2 pts, and 4th = 1 pt, and 0 pts beyond 4th place. So, at the end of the night, a team can earn a maximum total of 20 points if their combined scores on each game are higher than all the other teams.
We will start the tournament at 7:30 pm. You can sign up at the front counter starting at 4 pm when the arcade opens. We'll cut registration off at 7:15 pm so there is time to form up the groups. If we have a number of players that is not divisible by either 3 or 4 (6, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24, 27, 28, 30, etc...), then any remainder of players that cannot be put into a team of 3 or 4 will be dropped from those that registered the latest on the registration sheet. All teams must have the same number of players.
Let's give this a whirl and see how it goes! Hope to see you all out at Past Times this Thursday!
