World Atlatl Day 2025

The World Atlatl Association has designated the First Saturday in June as World Atlatl Day and is celebrated across the globe with everything from Just for Fun throws, teaching & instruction events, to International Standard Accuracy Competitions. The Campbell County Rockpile Museum and the Pumpkin Buttes Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society will be hosting a Just for Fun throw from 10am – 2pm on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Guests are invited to join Rockpile Museum staff and summer interns in the field just below the museum for a fun day of throwing darts with atlatls. The atlatl and dart are the oldest hunting system that has been used by humans around the world. Here in the Powder River Basin, dart points and atlatl parts have been found in numerous archeological sites. And the Spring Creek Cave located in the Big Horn Mountains has produced some of the best-preserved atlatl and darts dated to the seasonal migrations of the people associated with the Late Plains Archaic period (2000 – 1500 BP).

Come and enjoy the day learning and perfecting your skill with the atlatl. The Museum will have three shooting lanes set-up using their 3-D Pronghorn Targets. Special guest Doug Dumbrill will share his collection of atlatls and bows, answer questions, and lead a build-your-own atlatl activity.

This event will take place in the field behind the museum and can be accessed by using 1st Street. While the World Atlatl Day event is open and free to the public from 10am – 2pm Saturday, June 7, 2025, entrance to the Campbell County Rockpile Museum is still subject to standard admission fees.
