1. SITUATION SUMMARY: Over the past several weeks, there has been a notable increase in enemy activity within Binh Dinh Province, specifically along key transportation corridors and near populated hamlets. Reports indicate that Viet Cong elements, possibly reinforced by NVA cadre, have intensified patrols, ambushes, and propaganda dissemination.
2. FRIENDLY CONTACT: The II CORPS MIKE Force, under the operational command of Colonel Peter Wilkins, has made repeated contact with enemy forces during reconnaissance and interdiction operations. Engagements have included sporadic firefights, detection of booby traps, and capture of enemy logistical materials. 3. REQUEST FOR REINFORCEMENT: Colonel Wilkins has submitted an urgent request for reinforcement due to sustained operations and the need for increased operational pressure on VC positions. Current force levels are insufficient to hold and expand cleared zones.
4. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that a detachment of U.S. Special Forces be temporarily assigned to operate in conjunction with the 81st ARVN Ranger Group. This ARVN unit has extensive operational familiarity with the local terrain and has recently conducted successful joint operations in the vicinity.
5. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Further reconnaissance and aerial surveillance are advised to assess potential enemy build-up. Coordination with local RF/PF units should be reinforced to maintain security perimeters.
