In honor of the African Heritage Month this September, AfriThrive is thrilled to announce its first-ever Taste of Africa, a vibrant culinary and cultural fundraiser, taking place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.
This first-of-its-kind food experience invites guests on a flavorful journey across the African continent through traditional dishes, healing ingredients, live performances, and immersive storytelling. All proceeds will support AfriThrive’s Food as Medicine initiative, which provides culturally appropriate food access and nutrition education to low-income families in Montgomery County and beyond.
Across the world, the healthiest communities are those who stay connected to their traditional foods – meals made from the earth, shared with others, and rooted in meaning. The Taste of Africa invites us into that same wisdom. With every dish, we honor generations who understood that food is medicine, culture, and connection. This experience celebrates the richness of African foods where healing doesn’t come from trends, but from time-tested ingredients, shared stories, and the joy of eating well.
“Taste of Africa is more than an event—it’s the beginning of a cultural food movement,” said Dr. Truphena Choti, Founder and CEO of AfriThrive. It’s a space where food becomes a bridge to healing, heritage, and hope. Through every flavor and every story, we are building support for food justice, health equity, and community resilience.”
Attendees will enjoy:
A Fundraiser for Food as Medicine
All proceeds from the event will directly benefit AfriThrive’s Food as Medicine initiative, which provides low-income families with culturally relevant food, nutrition education, and farm-based wellness programs that prioritize health, dignity, and cultural connection.
