Kolonialisme en wetenschap hebben een gecompliceerde en vervlochten geschiedenis. Veel collectiestukken uit natuurhistorische musea, die nog altijd gebruikt worden in huidig wetenschappelijk onderzoek, zijn afkomstig uit landen met een geschiedenis getekend door koloniale regimes. Onze moderne onderzoekscultuur heeft ook weinig aandacht voor "indigenous knowledge” of andere niet-traditioneel Westerse manieren van kennisoverdracht. Bovendien is er een nijpend tekort aan wetenschappelijke data uit niet-westerse landen.
Wij zijn een groep van vijf masterstudenten biologie aan de UGent die voor het vak “Human & Political Ecology” de kans kregen om rond een zelfgekozen thema een symposium te organiseren. De verwevenheid van wetenschap en kolonialisme is een interessant thema om onze eigen interesses en studierichting te mengen met een maatschappelijk belangrijk en actueel thema. In dit symposium zullen onze sprekers deze gedeelde geschiedenis illustreren, maar we proberen ook om de huidige situatie te schetsen en de rol van een universiteit in dit soort kwesties te bevragen.
Er wordt na elke spreker ook een moment voorzien om vragen te stellen en we sluiten dit symposium af met een receptie. Om beter te kunnen inschatten hoeveel volk we verwachten op de receptie, vragen we om deze forms in te vullen:

Sprekers:
Philsan Omar Osman (zij/haar) is promovendus aan de Open Universiteit in Nederland en mede-auteur van Voor Wie Willen We Zorgen: Ecofeminisme als Inspiratiebron (EPO, 2021). Haar werk beweegt zich rond intersectionaliteit en dekoloniale ecologieën. Ze start een onderzoek op binnen het Innovating for Resilience programma, dat zich richt op de manier waarop gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen in de Lage Landen bijdragen aan innovatieve en inclusieve duurzaamheidstransities. Philsan Omar Osman is afkomstig uit Somalië, is schrijver, activist en community builder.
Adriana Moreno-Cely is a dedicated postdoctoral researcher at the University of Liège and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She is genuinely passionate about collaborative and decolonial research strategies, aiming to bridge the artificial barriers that separate academic disciplines. Adriana advocates for the vital role of Indigenous and local knowledge in creating alternative pathways to achieve epistemic, social, racial, and environmental justice. To this end, Adriana explores the possibilities of decolonial and feminist theories to integrate diverse knowledge systems, promoting opportunities to decenter, deprivilege, and diversify knowledge production. Currently, she is involved in three projects: an ERC Starting Grant Project focused on decolonising international biodiversity law, a European Erasmus initiative aiming to unpack coloniality in the secondary school curriculum, and a VLIR-OUS project in Bolivia designed to establish a learning and research network on sustainable territorial governance.
