This event commemorates the emancipatory events of June 19, 1865, in Texas in relation to the ongoing movement for justice in the United States today. Juneteenth 2025 will take place shortly after the fifth anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. It is fitting, therefore, to have members of the Floyd family speak in Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth, about the historical significance of Juneteenth and the pursuit of civil rights today. In partnership with the University of Houston, the Rosenberg Library will host a panel discussion with members of the Floyd family and historians David McNally and Sam Collins about these important topics.
The event will take place in the Rosenberg Library’s Trustees Hall and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
