Hanging of the Greens

Join us at First United Methodist Church of Gadsden for a meaningful Hanging of the Greens service as we celebrate the beginning of the Advent season. This special worship experience combines Scripture, music from the GFUMC Children’s Choir and Chancel Choir and the Gadsden State A Capella Choir, and congregational participation as we prepare our sanctuary—and our hearts—for the coming of Christ.
A Hanging of the Greens service is a longstanding Christian tradition in which the church adorns its worship space with symbols of Advent and Christmas. During the service, various “greens” and decorations are placed throughout the sanctuary, each accompanied by readings that explain their meaning. Evergreen wreaths remind us of God’s unending love, Chrismon ornaments proclaim the story of Jesus through Christian symbols, candles represent Christ as the Light of the World, and the Christmas tree stands as a sign of life and hope. Through these symbolic actions, we mark the transition into Advent, a season of watching, waiting, and preparing for the birth of our Savior.
