Country and western music drug her from WV to Nashville to New York to maybe endlessly the road. She's even slummed it at Clatter a few times. We were eager to catch up with her on her way to Ohio, and just our luck, she was up for it. Olivia will perform at Clatter, solo this time, right after our regular jazz night. We'll be taking donations.

Her newest album, Do It Myself, is getting the right kind of attention. Saving Country Music calls it "one of those albums that you measure all of the other albums against as the year unfolds." Meanwhile, The Bluegrass Situation, in a more lengthy and very insightful review, calls it "danceable, country, honky-tonkin’, and bluegrassy while it boasts deft and majestic moments of WV DIY, punk, and rock and roll."

I will add myself that everything I've heard from I'll Do It Myself is Lloyd at her most direct, poetic, and economical, leaving room for no-bullcrap clarity and humor within the form. It's a smart woman presenting an honest read of the situation. Musically, it sounds like all the influences of a girl from a small town that was deeply steeped in country and western, but which also had the full force of radio and MTV arriving on its shores like Columbus, shining like gods, whatever else they may have borne. The attendant influences and antagonisms are also in the writ.
