Join host Nate Butler in learning about the history of cinema, and enjoy classic silent films with live piano music!
The Tramp was English actor Charlie Chaplin's most memorable on-screen character, and an icon in world cinema during the era of silent film. As portrayed by Chaplin, the Tramp is a childlike and bumbling but generally good-hearted character who is often (but not always) portrayed as a mischievous vagrant. He endeavors to behave with the manners and dignity of a gentleman, despite his actual social status. However, while the Tramp is ready to take what paying work is available, he also uses his cunning to get what he needs to survive and escape the authority figures who will not tolerate his antics. And he does have his antics!
This month, we’ll see two of the earliest films featuring this classic character, both from the year 1915: “The Tramp” and “Work”!
“The Tramp” marked the real emergence of the Tramp character, a role Chaplin had played in earlier films, but here he plays him with more emotional depth, showing a caring side towards others.
And “Work” is one of the first movies to appreciate the slapstick potential of a painting and decorating scenario! So, take that, Harold Lloyd! ;)
