Cossack/ Bajinhurrba - Ross Anderson MAAWA June Talk

Cossack/ Bajinhurrba was the first colonial port in Western Australia’s Northwest Pilbara region servicing the early pearling, pastoral and mining industries, operating from 1862 to around the 1920s before being abandoned as a commercial port.

Today it is one of the State’s most significant historical archaeological precincts, with remains of buildings, an Asian cemetery, Chinese market garden, Aboriginal fringe camps, shipwrecks and maritime infrastructure.


OUR SPEAKER
WA Museum Curator ROSS ANDERSON will present the results of past surveys by the Department of Maritime Heritage that have identified eight new shipwrecks and other maritime infrastructure lying in the inter-tidal zone of Butcher Inlet, and discuss some of the management issues affecting Cossack’s future.
