The Appalachian Wind Quintet has distinguished itself as one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s finest woodwind chamber ensembles. With broad experience as soloists, symphonic and small ensemble musicians for many years, the members joined talents to form their uniquely cohesive musical group. The ensemble gave its first public concert in 1987 and maintains the original personnel except for the French horn, when the original member, Ed Schupp, retired in 2013.
Distinctions include the first-place award in the Baltimore Chamber Music Competition, and grants from Chamber Music America, Washington County Arts Council, and the Maryland State Arts Council, including the designation as a Maryland Art Treasure. Concert venues for the Appalachian Wind Quintet have included such halls as the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and the Maryland Theater. The ensemble has performed for conservatories and institutions of higher learning, such as Peabody Conservatory, Shepherd University, Hood College, Lycoming College, Hagerstown Community College, and St. James and Mercersburg Academies. The Appalachian Wind Quintet is a frequent guest on regional church and museum music recital series programs. The group’s CD, 19th Century Music for Winds, with pianist Noel Lester, can be heard on National Public Radio.
