On Friday, June 6, Indiana Modern, an affinity group of Indiana Landmarks, hosts two special events focused on the works of famed architects Eliel Saarinen and son Eero Saarinen, whose designs for homes, churches, and public buildings—including the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary—help set the tone for modern architecture in America.
To begin the evening, Kevin Adkisson, curator for the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research in Michigan, presents an illustrated talk reflecting on the Saarinens’ impact, from their pioneering work in the 1930s to influence that can still be seen today. The talk from 6 to 7 p.m. is free and open to the public with the support of the Cornelius O’Brien Lecture Series. Advanced registration strongly encouraged due to limited space.
Following the talk, stay for exclusive tour and cocktail reception (paid ticket required) from 7 to 9 p.m. highlighting two landmarks designed by the Saarinens, beginning with the seminary’s Kramer Chapel. After visiting Kramer Chapel, attendees will be transported by shuttle to the nearby A.C. Wermuth House, a private home rarely open to the public. Albert Wermuth, a general contractor and frequent collaborator with the Saarinens’ firm, hired the Saarinens to design the property in 1941, one of only a small number of house designs completed by the father-and-son team. While at the Wermuth House, enjoy a private reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Tickets including the evening’s tour and reception cost $75/person. Advance purchase required.
The Saarinen Talk & Tour are presented by Indiana Modern, an affinity group of Indiana Landmarks that works to preserve and promote the best of mid-twentieth century architecture, design, and landscapes across the state.
