Join us Thursday, Sept 4th from 5-8pm for the opening of three new exhibitions: Circus Orbis by Beauvais Lyons, Spacial Fiction by Peter Scheidt, and juried group exhibition, Horizon: Contemporary Approaches to the Land!
Circus Orbis
"Circus Orbis: See to Believe” offers a window into a little-known part of American history. Founded in 1908 by Thaddeus Evergood, Circus Orbis was a regional circus based in Jacksboro, Tennessee that performed in the American South and Midwest for more than twenty years.
Organized by the Hokes (pronounced “hoax”) Archives, the name “Hokes” is a key ironic signal. Circus Orbis is actually an elaborate work of fictive art created by Beauvais Lyons, who is a Chancellor’s Professor of Art and Divisional Dean for Arts and Humanities in UT’s College of Arts and Sciences. In this exhibition Lyons explores how fictive art forms can reveal the role of media in both advancing, or even undermining our understanding of the world.
Spacial Fiction
This solo exhibition by Peter Scheidt includes sculptural investigations of different chair forms. By manipulating discarded everyday furniture, Scheidt explores questions of function, non-function, and meaning. He is interested in creating an honest dialogue with the original identity of the salvaged chairs. Furniture sets a script for interaction and use, and Scheidt enjoys rewriting or flipping the script on these ubiquitous objects, encouraging viewers to pause and reflect.
Horizon: Contemporary Approaches to the Land
Juried by Artlink's Interim Director, Tim Parsley, this group exhibition includes work by 21 artists exploring the landscape through a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, collage, printmaking, ceramic, and mixed media. Each work that was selected focuses on the land, though that focus shifts greatly from artist to artist. Bird's eye views, vast open plains, quiet horizon lines, and up-close examinations of nature -- this exhibition is a testament to the beauty that surrounds us.
