Backpacking the Lost Coast Trail, 3 Days

Backpack the Lost Coast exploring California’s most remote stretch of coastline and camp under the stars! Professional guides, all permits, all meals and shuttles included.

The Lost Coast is an isolated area of Humboldt and Mendocino counties, named for the steep and rugged terrain which made the construction of any state highway into the region too costly. As a result, the Lost Coast is one of the most pristine and undeveloped coastal areas of California. We’ll hike the North segment of this secluded and classic trail.

This 24.6 mile trip contours the shoreline for 3 days from Mattole Beach in the north to Black Sands Beach in the south. As we hike along the beach, we’ll experience epic views of the Pacific Ocean, crashing waves, whales, elephant seals, abandoned houses and the Lost Coast rugged mountain range. If you like dramatic seascapes, this is the trip for you! Each night we’ll camp at free flowing streams home to spawning salmon and relax with a delicious meal while catching the sunset. Each day, we’ll time the tides as we continue south to Shelter Cove.
