Beginning on Tuesday April 1st, Meeple Madness will host a weekly Matched-Play League for the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game (MESBG)!
This League is designed to introduce new players to the hobby as well as grow the MESBG community here in the shoppe. Players will be using the current rules for the game along with the most up-to-date model profiles which can be found in the new Armies of The Hobbit and the Armies of the Lord of The Rings books.
*Players can bring any currently existing army with them (including those found in the upcoming Armies of Middle-Earth book.) We encourage you to bring both a Good and Evil army with you on Tuesday to create more interesting matched play scenario options, but this is completely optional and you will only need one army in order to participate.Once you have constructed your army list(s) and gathered up all your miniatures and dice, you will be able to participate in the weekly League. The League is casual and mostly intended to help familiarize players with the updated rules and gameplay mechanics while also providing a fun matched play environment.
For each week of the League there will be a recommended set points limit that both players should take into account when making army lists. The points limit for list building each week will be found in the chart below:
*Points Limit Chart:
Week 1: 400 points (Scouting Party)
Week 2: 550 points (Battle Company)
Week 3: 700 points (Battalion)
Week 4: 850 points (War Host)
The chart will reset each month that the League is active - giving players a chance to play different army lists while also giving them time to build and paint up their forces for the upcoming week.
*Players are always welcome to play at whatever points value they have models available for and are not bound to the points limit chart above. The chart is designed to give the League a more structured feel, and to offer an escalation-type option for each subsequent week of play.
The different scenarios that we will be using each week can be found in the back of the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual book along with several pages explaining how Matched Play works for the game. You and your opponent are welcome to play whatever scenario you would like each week so long as you both agree. You are also welcome to roll a D6 to determine which scenario will be played as described on page #159 in the Rules Manual.
*There will also be a nice GAMEPLAY BONUS for fielding a FULLY PAINTED ARMY! A player who uses an army that is fully painted (models and bases) will automatically win Initial Priority for the first round of each scenario! If both players have fully painted armies, then the players will roll off as normal to determine who has Initial Priority.
*Although the League will be focused primarily on Matched-Play scenarios, you are welcome to play Narrative Scenarios with your opponent if you wish. If enough players are interested, Meeple Madness may even host a monthly Narrative scenario themed around one of the epic battles depicted in the movies! (examples: Battle of the Last Alliance, Battle of Helm’s Deep, Siege of Minas-Tirith, Battle of Pelennor Fields, etc.)
It is an exciting time to be a MESBG player! Games Workshop has been breathing new life into the game with re-sculpts of some of the old metal models into their new detailed plastic kits, as well as a brand new edition of the game alongside a new War of the Rohirrim core set! Meeple Madness is happy to host a weekly night for MESBG players to play out their favorite scenarios in the shoppe and we hope to see you there!
