About the event

Borderless Sound – Latin American Composers & the World Stage
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for a vibrant, music-rich conversation hosted by Lia Uribe, bassoonist, educator, and host of Sound Perimeter on KUAF 91.3.

Designed for all audiences (no musical background needed) this event will be a conversation in the spirit of Sound Perimeter, expanding our musical boundaries and deepening our connection to Latin-American sounds as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The program will highlight the impact of Latin American composers on the world stage, from Astor Piazzolla, whose genre-defying tango opened doors for global recognition, to the innovative voices of Miguel del Águila, Gabriela Ortiz, and Angélica Negrón, among others.

Dr. Lia Uribe, Associate Dean for the Arts and Humanities and Professor of Music at the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, University of Arkansas, is an accomplished educator, arts advocate, and bassoonist. She champions the music of emerging composers, commissions new works for bassoon, and has performed as a guest artist in over 20 countries. Her leadership includes the creation of the innovative RefleXions Music Series, a project that centers creativity, plurality, and artistic excellence through opportunities to reflect, learn, grow, change, and teach. Lia is also the host of Sound Perimeter, an NPR-affiliated podcast dedicated to amplifying diverse voices in and around music. A native of Colombia, she holds a bachelor’s degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, a master’s from the University of Arkansas, a doctorate from the University of Kansas, and an MBA in Arts Innovation from the Global Leaders Institute.
