SYNOPSIS
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, CLYBOURNE PARK spans two generations fifty years apart. In 1959, Russ and Bev are selling their desirable two bedroom
at a bargain price, unknowingly bringing the first black family into the neighborhood (borrowing a plot line from Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun) and creating ripples of discontent among the cozy white residents of Clybourne Park. In 2009, the same property is being bought by a young white couple, whose plan to raze the house and start again is met with equal disapproval by the black residents of the soon-to-be gentrified area. Are the issues festering beneath the floorboards actually the same, fifty years on? This excruciatingly funny and squirm inducing satire explores the fault line between race and property.
CHARACTERS
Note: all actors will play two roles, one character in each Act. See below for character breakdowns.
Russ / Dan: M, Late 40s, White.
Russ (1959) - Married to Bev. Selling his home to escape the ghosts of the past. An independent thinker. Strong, silent type. Dan (2009) - A friendly but somewhat oblivious construction worker.
Bev / Kathy: F, 40s, White.
Bev (1959) - Married to Russ. Grieving a loss, but hopeful for the future. Believes in the good in people… but a product of her time. Kathy (2009) - A real estate lawyer representing the buyers.
Francine / Lena: F, 30s, Black.
Francine (1959) - Married to Albert. Housemaid for Russ and Bev. Dignified despite her station in life. She just wants to go home. Lena (2009) - Selling her family property. A woman of principles. Strongly opposed to gentrification.
Jim / Tom: M, Late 20s, White.
Jim (1959) - Pastor at the local church. A good man
trying to provide council. Tom (2009) - A real estate lawyer representing the sellers.
Albert / Kevin: M, 30s, Black.
Albert (1959) - Married to Francine. A product of his
time, he is accommodating but a shrewd judge of character. Kevin (2009) - Married to Lena. Easy-going until he is pushed too far.
Karl / Steve: M, 30s, White.
Karl (1959) - Married to Betsy. A busybody. He sees what’s happening to the neighborhood and he doesn’t like it. Supports segregation. PLEASE NOTE if actor has experience with ASL. Steve (2009) - Married to Lindsey. Buying a new home in a predominantly black neighborhood. Not the most tactful person.
Betsy / Lindsey: F, Late 20s, White.
Betsy (1959) - Married to Karl. Deaf. Very pregnant. She just got dragged along to this argument. PLEASE NOTE if actor is fluent in ASL. Though Betsy is deaf and uses ASL, she does speak out loud at times, with affected speech. Lindsey (2009) - Married to Steve. Visibly pregnant. Buying a new home in a predominantly black neighborhood. Thinks of herself as a good, educated, liberal person.
