Beating the Bounds is an ancient tradition that maintained the knowledge of Parish Boundaries in the days before maps (and phones) were readily available.
Everyone is invited to a community celebration and walk the 14 mile boundary together, tracing the historic outline of the Parish of Shrivenham - a rare opportunity to be led across private land, with the owners' kind permissions.
Walkers should assemble at The Stocks (opposite The Barrington Arms) from 08:00 to 'sign in' and be ready to receive a safety brief and blessing at 08:15. We're normally finished by 17:00 but it will depend on the size and ability of the group on the day.
Stout footwear is essential and long trousers recommended! We will walk through long grass, occasional nettles and, weather depending, some ankle deep water. There'll be a few ditches, gates, fences and barbed wire to negotiate - we all help each other over, through and along though - it's great fun!
Walkers should bring and carry lunch and enough snacks and drink to last the whole day. Some hot drinks and cakes will be available half way. This pit-stop is a good opportunity for people to leave the walk if they would love to be involved but don't think they're up to the whole 14 miles.
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Sadly dogs are not allowed due to some of the land, obstacles and wildlife we may encounter.
Please register your interest and share this event.
