Our workshops ignite children's creativity and develop their design skills. See the workshop information for full details.
Welcome!
Please do take a couple of minutes to read the details below as it explains what you can expect from our workshops.
Our workshops are based on a design and make principle. Participants will be guided through a design project and then we will make their design for them to have (sometimes in the session and sometimes after the session - see below).
Places are very limited so booking is essential. It will not be possible to turn up without a ticket. For this workshop, participants need to be aged 8 to 15yrs. Emergency contact details will be completed during the checkout process.
Please note that we need a minimum of four people to book for the workshop to go ahead. If less than 4 tickets are sold, we will contact you and refund your payment. Participants should be dropped off at the FabLab and collected at the end of the workshop unless you give permission for them to leaver at the end in the checkout process.
About this Workshop:
In our workshops, our Digital Making Tutor, Marcus Brown, will briefly run through how the process works and will give a short demonstration pointing out some of the key design techniques needed for the session. Following this, attendees get to create their own designs and Marcus will support any issues or help with more complicated requests.
In this workshop, your child will learn 2D design skills to create a vector-based design for their own hexagonal treasures box. They will get to create the design for the lid which we will laser-engrave for them.
This workshop includes:
One hinged hexagonal pre-formed wooden box which we will engrave the lid.
Buying additional designs:
Sometimes when people see their design, they decide that they would like to buy more of them. If this applies to you, this is completely possible. Please email and I will quote for the cost and will contact you when it has been made and is ready for collection. Through the summer (which is my busiest period) it might be that the additional copies will be made in September but I will make them sooner if possible. I keep their designs for a year after the workshop date.
Design Making
Their design in this workshop will not be made in the session due to the time it takes. The design will be made after the workshop and I will email the person who bought the ticket to let them know that it is ready for collection. I am able to send designs around Devon to other libraries free of charge - this information will be taken in the checkout process.
A few things to note:
Refunds - our policy is no refunds. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as we are running a waiting list and, if we can resell your ticket, we will refund your ticket (but not the Eventbrite fee). If we cannot resell your ticket then no refund will be issued. If you are unable to attend then please notify us as soon as possible and then we can 'release your ticket'.
If we have to cancel a workshop for any reason, we will refund you your payment in full.
Late Arrival - It will not be possible to join the workshop if you arrive more than 15 minutes late. By this time, we are getting into the technical content of the workshop and it's not possible to go back over what we have already covered.
Mobile Phones - Mobile phones should not be used in the workshop. It is ok for participants to have a phone with them but they must not be used in the session. If you have any further questions - please do email us at:

Toilets - change of situation currently - The children's library toilet (which is nearby to the FabLab) is currently out of action due to a large and very exciting redevelopment which is currently taking place. Therefore, please can I ask that you use the toilet before arriving for the workshop. Then, in the middle of the workshop, I will walk the group up to the top floor of the Library and anyone who needs to, can use the toilet. Your child/ren will not be sent up their alone.
Appropriate Design Content - In some recent workshops I have had to say no to some image and text content attendees have selected. I mention at the start of workshops that the content must be age appropriate and not offensive. If there are any issues with this I may phone an emergency contact to check if they are happy. All of our internet delivery in the library has a filter running to minimise inappropriate content.
Any questions? If so, please do email me and I will come back to you. I work part-time so it can take 2-3 days to receive a reply sometimes.
Many thanks,
Marcus Brown
