Dear Residents
The LDWA Highland Coast to Coast Challenge Walk – 28 June 2025
I am writing to let you know about an event organised by the Long Distance Walkers’ Association, the Highland Coast to Coast challenge walk, which is taking place in the area at the weekend. It is a new event taking place on the public footpath crossing from Ullapool to Ardgay.
Around 150 people will start walking the 36-mile route, continuously, over 15 hours starting from Ullapool at 9.00am and passing three checkpoints on their way to the finish at the Ardgay Community Hall. You may have read about it in the local newsletter.
We have worked for the past year with the local estates and landowners to ensure we are managing our event conscientiously and with due respect to the livestock, flora and fauna along the route and we have had good support from the landowners and farmers along the route too. We have also tried to ensure that local businesses and charities benefit from the event and its supporters over the weekend. The police and emergency services are also aware of the event.
The Headquarters for the event is the Community Hall in Ardgay, where the majority of the participants will register at 6.00am on Saturday morning 28th June before being transferred to Ullapool by coach between 6.15am and 7.00am. Once the coaches have left the Hall there will be little going on until around 7pm in the evening when walkers will start arriving back.
To minimise disruption for local residents we have a team of marshals on hand who will direct participants arriving by car to recognised parking areas.
You may see walkers coming into Ardgay between 7pm and midnight. It’s unlikely they will need torches as it should be light until the very end. The majority of our walkers are older members who are very familiar with long distance walking, the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and the need for consideration and courtesy, especially in built up areas during the evening and overnight. We will also stress the need for quiet as they enter and exit the Hall.
If you have any queries or concerns about the above please email me. Otherwise, it would be good if you could give our walkers a bit of encouragement if you see them passing, especially in the later stages of the walk!
Yours faithfully
