Our human biology evolved through millennia of interaction with nature, creating a profound disconnect in today's world where technology bombard our senses while natural stimuli are scarce. Spending time in nature isn't merely another recreational option—it's a vital component of wellness that modern life often neglects. There is a growing body of research that shows time in nature provides numerous health benefits.
We don’t have to travel to exotic landscapes. All it takes is slowing down, looking with fresh eyes, and noticing the miracles that surround us. This workshop, based on Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Experience process, offers a guided exploration of an Evanston forest and parkland that will awaken your animal senses and renew your connection to the living world.
Each session begins with gentle warm-ups and breathing practices to awaken the body and attune your senses. Then we embark on a slow, mindful walk through forest and cottonwood parkland, with abundant time to explore through sight, sound, touch, and smell (well, maybe not taste). There is time for open-eyed, seated meditation, and finally a group sharing of insights where collective wisdom can emerge. You can read more about this method and its inspirations here.
Benefits include:
Enhanced sensory awareness and mental clarity
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved immune function and cardiovascular health
Embodied insight into what really matters
Greater connection to your local communities (human, plant, animal, mineral…)
Our landscape is Harbert-Payne park in Evanston, on the east side of the North Shore Canal, between Dempster and Main. We will meet at the picnic shelter near the playground on McDaniel between Crain and Greenleaf. See the exact spot by following this link:

The walk will take place in the grass fields and small cottonwood forest along the canal. The distance traveled will be modest, but it will require navigating wood-chipped trails and forest debris.
We will still meet if it is raining, but not if there is lightning or strong wind. Please try to register at least one day beforehand, to ensure you will be notified of last-minute changes.
Recommended gear: weather-appropriate clothing, water bottle, bag or backpack, insect repellent if sensitive to bugs
Cost: $40, members save 15%
