The Great Mullet Cook Up is returning to the Clarence River!
This event is thanks to the efforts of local commercial fishers, the Harwood Fishing Club, and the Clarence River Fishermen’s Co-op, who are teaming up with us to raise awareness about river health, fish kills, flood impacts, and the future of this incredible fishery.
With support from OzFish, the event will serve up fresh, locally caught mullet with a side of straight-talk from OzFish experts and an opportunity to speak with Minister Janelle Saffin on how we can look after the mighty Clarence River and nearby Richmond River.
Date: Saturday 19 July 2025
Time: 10am – 1pm AEST
Venue: Harwood Boat Ramp, Martins Point Rd, Harwood NSW 2465.

Why it matters?
The Clarence River’s floodplain wetlands are vital to fish survival and river health. The recent fish kills and blackwater events are symptoms of long-term issues, but they are fixable. A healthy habitat means healthy fisheries.
Fortunately, it’s the community, especially local fishers, who hold the knowledge and passion to help lead the recovery. Your voice matters, and this event is one way to make sure you’re heard.
This event aims to help locals see how simple actions like restoring floodplain wetlands, planting along riverbanks, restoring and protecting saltmarsh and mangroves, and rebuilding oyster reefs can bring the river back to life. When the community gets behind these efforts, the fish return, water quality improves, and the benefits flow through every part of the system, from ecosystems to economies.
This project is run in partnership with Clarence River Fishermen’s Co-op, Ballina Fishermen’s Co-op, Clarence Valley Council, Harwood Recreational Fishing Club, Clarence Cane Growers Association, Richmond Cane Growers Association, Clarence River Guardians, Southern Cross University, Maclean Lions Club, Yaegl and Bundjalung Traditional Owners, and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
