An Evening of One Act Plays

“You, The Jury” by Anne Coulter Martens
Directed by Lars Sage
This jury play has unusual audience appeal in that members of the audience are summoned as jurors and their verdict actually does determine the outcome of the trial. Bill, a college student holding a number of part-time jobs, is accused by one of his employers of the theft of an unsealed envelope containing three $100 bills. He doesn't deny that he had access to the money. The witnesses called to testify for Bill are contradictory. It is a fine play with illuminating overtones on law and circumstantial evidence.

“The Zoo Story (New Version)” by Edward Albee****
Directed by Jen Bass
The Zoo Story takes place on a Sunday afternoon in New York City’s Central Park. Peter, a middle-class man of some means, is reading quietly on a park bench, as he does every Sunday. His reading is interrupted by Jerry, who is somewhat younger and looks a bit shabby, and who stands near the bench and announces (out of the blue) that he has “been to the zoo.” Peter doesn’t understand why this stranger has chosen to talk to him, but after trying unsuccessfully to return to his book, he begins to engage. Jerry again brings up the zoo, and mysteriously hints that something “happened” there.
