Using acoustics for bird tracking and research

Join us on Friday, July 18, 2025 to meet Tessa Rhinehart and learn about her fascinating research.

Tessa Rhinehart is a PhD student in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biology. Her research focuses on developing methods to monitor and track animals using autonomous sensors, especially acoustic recorders. Tessa's work seeks to reveal bird behavior and ecology at a scale and level of detail which is impossible for humans to observe. Her expertise includes acoustically "triangulating" birds' singing locations, studying how to reduce bias from automated sound identification algorithms like Merlin, and studying prey availability for birds using nocturnal "photo booths" for moths.

This is a hybrid program which starts at 7 PM. You can attend in person at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. Doors there will open at 6:30 PM for refreshments and socializing.
