Description:
For anyone who might be interested, you don't have to be a musician to benefit from this seminar, but it helps! Much of what we'll be discussing and workshopping applies to any artistic endeavour, and lovers of creative writing may also especially benefit.
Our main focus will be to give individuals and teams the tools to spark up new ideas, with the goal of making creativity a regular part of their routines, and most of all, fun.
We will draw on spiritual traditions, literary theory, musicology and psychology. Never fear, it all has been previously workshopped to ensure maximum fun.
The first masterclass is called "Taming the Monkey." We will discuss the obstacles in our lives that prevent us from being inspired, and how to go around them. We will extensively workshop strategies to spark creativity. There will be role-playing and general fooling about.
No musical instruments are needed at this initial class. There will be no photocopied handouts. All you need is an A4 notepad and a writing instrument.
The second class is called "Craft," and discusses how we analyse and edit our raw ideas into shape. This is where you bring your own individual talents to the table, so musical instruments are welcome. Though musical forms and conventions will be mentioned, this is by no means a theory or composition class. This is the part of creativity where we consider what the finished song or poem or instrumental composition may look like.
Again, lots of workshopping, more music focused, and more role-playing and tomfoolery. There will be discussion on the dynamics of teamwork and collaboration. Who is it good for? When to use it?
The third and final class is simply called “Commerce.” No, it’s not a marketing course, or advice on how to shop your work to a publisher. Instead we discuss how peer groups, audience and the market change the work. Musical genre, tradition and industry expectations all play into this, and we hope this discussion will be lively.
Lastly, in this class we will workshop these effects. What if your poem became a heavy metal song? What if someone took your hip hop rhyme and made it a traditional ballad? After you have impressed yourself with your new work, do your friends’ opinions matter?
There will be no test bcat the end. I hope participants will bring away some insights and a plan of action for the future. Hopefully new friends will be made and collaborations will follow!
